Abstract

  • Measuring pasture biomass is critical to inform pasture management for optimised utilisation.
  • Traditional techniques for measuring pasture performance are time-consuming and costly. Emerging pasture performance tools were assessed for accuracy, availability (of the tool and of data collected), calibrations used in development, and limitations.
  • Considerable efforts have been made with new tools to reduce the time and effort required to measure pasture performance, although limitations of accuracy remain, associated with calibration methods used in development. Promising future technologies will involve greater ground truthing for validation and fusion of multiple data sources.
